Writer's Block: Snack attack

Question:

Snack attack
What food would you never put in your mouth for any reason, and why?


There's cucumber, which all who know me keep far far away from me. Blergh, food of icky-nastiness! That texture, that flavour, the way it infects every decent food around it....

Also, sea cucumber, which is not, as you might think, just the watery equivalent of the above. Nope. It's a sea-based slug. Tastes like a mouthful of grease. Seriously, I love seafood, but I have my limits.

Finally, sea urchin. Yes, I love sushi. Yes, I know it's considered a delicacy. No, I will not put something that has the taste and texture of week-old sperm mixed with phlem.

Yes, that description is from experience.

I mean the sea urchin, not the sperm, people! Eww. Need mind bleach now.

Thank you for providing that clarification.

In all things, urchins included, freshness is of the essence. The best oursins, when perfectly fresh, have a dishraggy fishiness reminiscent of poor hygeine and the texture of a brillo pad stewed until tender.

I can take them or leave them.

I have never eaten sea cucumber and I am curious to know who serves them, and where...

I had a mouthful of sea cucumber in a Chinese restaurant once. I couldn't bring myself to have another mouthful. It was foul.

I don't dislike fresh sea urchin, it's just a bit 'meh'... Except when served in a select few of the very best restaurants: but they can make anything taste superb, and do.

Out-of-date urchins are, of course, disgusting: but that's true of all seafood.


Also... Any opportunity to practice my descriptive writing is probably a good thing.
